On This Day in QPR HistoryÂ
5th August
QPR have only played 3 competitive games on this date and have a mixed record.
Our first game on this date was in 2006 when Gary Waddock took his team to Burnley for the opening game of the season.
QPR gave debuts to Nick Ward, Damion Stewart and Adam Czerkas as we looked to get off to a good start but Steve Cotterill's Burnley side was too strong, winning 2-0 thanks to a second half double from Steve Jones.
In 2017 we opened the season on this day at home to Reading with Ian Holloway giving a debut to Josh Scowen. You can see highlights of the game on the video below but Conor Washington gave QPR the lead in the first half before making it 2-0 with a second half penalty. Reading's Tiago Ilori was sent off for bringing down Pawel Wszolek for the penalty.
In 2023 this day was another season opener, but less said about this game the better. One of the worst QPR performances in my lifetime was away at Watford as we conceded from our own kick off within 30 seconds and were lucky Watford opted to call it a day after four goals in a humiliating defeat for Gareth Ainsworth.
